Founded in Dec. 2002 and supported by the Shanghai Municipal Government, Shanghai Integrated Circuit Research and Development Center (ICRD) is a non-profit research organization with fundings from investors led by Hua Hong Group. Built in accordance with the central government’s policies for further encouraging development of China’s IC industry, ICRD works closely with domestic enterprises, universities, and institutes in an effort to develop application technologies required by the advancement of the domestic microelectronics industry.

The organization also aims to gain capabilities for sustainable development by progressing through coordination with industrial partners. Services and technologies ICRD provides include:
- IP development and protection
- Open platforms for IC manufacturers in developing and testing advanced process technologies
- Feature module technologies for application products
- Product test vehicles for developing semiconductor equipment and materials
- In-field training base for academic and research organizations

CRD abides by the principle that the organization shall have further development through market-oriented operations based on international cooperation as well as industry-university-institute collaboration, forging close ties with world famous semiconductor enterprises and institutes such as IMEC, Europe’s largest independent research center in the field of microelectronics. ICRD has achieved impressive research results on deep submicron process technology through joint development with IMEC. The organization is now working with equipment manufacturers at home and abroad to establish a new world-class mainstream research facility, which will have a 3000-square-meter clean room and, upon construction, become China’s biggest open platform for IC process technology R&D.
